| Care and Grooming of the Xoloitzcuintle |
 |
The most common physical problem is skin care of the hairless Xolo.
Some suffer from skin irritations. XOLOS clean themselves by licking
themselves like a cat. The care includes bathing, moisturizing, sunscreen
for light colored skin, and care of toenails, ears and teeth. Dark
colored Xolos tolerate sun well, tanning in summer months and fading
in the winter. All Xolos need protection from the cold but tolerate
cold climates well with proper clothing. Care of the Xolo includes
exercise. |

Generally the Xolo is a long-lived dog, reaching an age of 16-20
years. Primitive and hardy for the most part, they are considered
to be a very healthy dog, susceptible to disease like other breeds.
Some Xolos have drug sensitivities and Xolos need special attention
when anesthetized. |
